Anyway--don't fear the root canal, I've had at least 3, and while it's not fun, it's not the nightmare people talk about, either. You're sore afterward, but it should actually feel better as it there's no nerve left to feel pain and it takes care of the initial problem (infection, abscess, etc.) Everyone's difference, but if you've had any major dental work, it's not so different--just take my hint to have a painkiller before all the Novocaine wears off completely, so it can kick in sooner!
Tell the dentist you aren't in pain any more, maybe things have changed?
